6/29/2020: SCOTUS Protects Abortion

The Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law regulating abortion clinics today! This is huge news. Just four years ago, the Supreme Court struck down a very similar Texas bill. Chief Justice John Roberts was a part of the dissenting opinion in that Texas case, only to be the deciding vote four years later in this Louisiana decision.

The precedent to protect abortion has been set time and time again. We know that abortion is healthcare, that it’s legal, that it’s safe. Despite this, Republicans keep on sending cases to the Supreme Court with the explicit goal of overturning Roe v. Wade in an effort to control women and everyone who can have children. We know that making abortions illegal only makes safe abortions illegal. Restrictive laws raise maternal and infant mortality rates. We also know that people of color are disproportionately impacted by these draconian laws. We can absolutely do better than this. And we will if we fight together.

We must not be complacent. The confirmation of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court solidified this administration’s insistence on appointing anti-choice judges to the court. We must prepare for, and expect, further attacks on reproductive rights–and one way we can ensure safe and legal abortions is through broad federal protections granted by Congress. We must enshrine abortion and reproductive rights into law through more than just contentious judicial opinions. In the interim, we can support organizations like Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America. Healthcare, all healthcare, is a human right. Let’s fight to realize this reality on a national level.
